Elements of Evaluation:

(1) Short Story Focusing on Setting: Students will write a short story (4+ pages) emphasizing the role of setting in fiction. The story will be accompanied by a paragraph explaining (a) how the setting has been established, (b) how the established setting contributes to the plot, and (c) how the established setting might help to symbolize some important theme or concept from the story. The story will be worth 20 points plus 5 points for the explanations (25 points total).

(2) Poetry Assignment: Students will write a sonnet and an open-form poem of at least ten lines. Each will be worth 10 points (20 points total).

(3) Drama Assignment Focusing on Dialogue: Students will write a scene from a one-act play (4+ pages) accompanied by an outline of the unwritten portion of the play and an explanation of how the dialogue helps to establish the characters and plot elements. The scene will be worth 20 points plus 5 points for the explanation (25 points total).

(4) Personal Project: Students will develop a personal writing project in a genre of their choice agreed upon by the instructor. Submit a proposal by Week 8. The project will be worth 30 points.

(5) Figuring Course Grades:

Short Story + Explanation 20 + 5
Poetry 10 + 10
Drama + Explanation 20 + 5
Personal Project 30

Total Possible: 100 (90+ = A; 80-89 = B; 70-79 = C; 60-69 = D; 59- = F)
