Elements of Evaluation:

(1) Class Participation:

The nature of this course demands that students exhibit their understanding of the topics by participating in decision-making and interacting with other staff members and contributors. This may be done through e-mail, MyHeritage Forums, and phone as well as through physical presence if necessary. For that reason, class participation will comprise 20% of the semester grade.

(2) Assigned Editorial Duties:

Each student will be assigned manuscripts and artwork to edit and lay out in for some project (such as a poetry chapbook for Pahto's Shadow, Arts Day, or Heritage Voices) in conjunction with the contributors (if any) and the editor-in-chief (Dr. Schmidt). Naturally, effective and efficient completion of these duties will be the most important element in the course grade: 30%.

(3) Exercises and Assignments:

As we learn new skills, students will be assigned exercises to practice them (see schedule for specific assignments and information on how to submit them for credit via e-mail or Forum posts). Altogether, these exercises will make up 25% of the semester grade.

(4) Individual Project:

To recapitulate the skills learned in the course, students will be asked to produce a camera-ready newsletter or website or similar project of their own choosing at the end of the semester. Alternatively, the student may take on more of the group project (usually a poetry chapbook for Arts Day/Heritage Voices or an update of the Pahto webzine). The project will be worth 25% of the semester grade.
