Elements of Assessment:

The following assignments will be factored into your course grade. In addition, these will also help assess your progress in mastering the outcomes noted above.

(1) Attendance and Participation in Instruction: Students will be expected to attend all class sessions (in person or online depending on your assignment) and help students work on exercises, find topics and articles for field research/journal reviews, etc. This will be the primary task in this course, so it will be worth 50 points total.

(2) Reflective Journal: During the course, students will keep an online journal (“blog”) noting their experiences in helping teach English 337-537 (Introduction to Linguistics), English 319 (Applied Syntax), or other assigned course. For example, a student can write about personal experiences in assisting individual students (do not name names!), thoughts concerning language issues observed in helping teach, personal reflections on oneself as a teacher, and so on. This journal is not graded but is required and will be part of your end-of-term debriefing and so relates to your Attendance/Participation.

(3) Teaching Demonstration: Students will work with the in-class or online instructor to select a unit to be taught in-class, online, or developed further in the supporting materials online. This assignment will be 25 points total.

(4) Field Research Project: Students will conduct an individual field research project in linguistics (observation and/or experiment). Each student will then report the results of this field research to the class. Afterwards, each student will write a paper of 750-1000 words (2.5-3.5 pages) detailing the research method, the results, and then discussing the theoretical and practical issues in linguistics connected with the research project. The project paper and presentation will be worth 25 points total. Reminder: Papers will include a bibliography of three sources related to your research project, two of which must be cited in the paper. This assignment may be replaced by an additional teaching demonstration with the approval of the instructor.

(5) Figuring Course Grades:

Teaching: Attendance & Participation (Including Reflective Journal) 50
Teaching Demonstration 25
Project/Teaching Demo 25
