Sept. 11:

Elluminate/In-Person Session with Dr. Schmidt. Introduction to Course. Types of Research.

Read MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing (MLA) Chap. 5, "Preparation of Theses and Dissertations."

Homework/In-Class Exercises: TBA

Sept. 12:

Elluminate Session with Research Librarian.

Arrange Individual Conferences with Dr. Schmidt and Research Librarian.

Homework/In-Class Exercises:

Run searches in the Electronic Catalog, JSTOR, and Academic Search Premiere.

Find ONE (1) book related to your topic (or possible topic) through the Electronic Catalog. Post on MyHeritage.

Find ONE (1) article related to your topic (or possible topic) through JSTOR. Post on MyHeritage.

Find ONE (1) book or article related to your topic (or possible topic) through a third search tool. Post on MyHeritage.

Sept. 13:

Elluminate Session with Dr. Schmidt. MLA Documentation. SKIM MLA Chap. 6 ("Documentation: Preparing the List of Works Cited"), Chap. 7 ("Documentation: Citing Sources in the Text"), and Chap. 8 ("Abbreviation").

Homework/In-Class Exercises:

Complete Documentation Exercise. Post on MyHeritage.

BEFORE Weekend 2:

ASAP:

Select Committee Chair, Recruit Committee Members.

Get Chair Approval of Topic/Research Approach/Research Question. Post on MyHeritage.

Begin Preliminary Research for Review of Literature.

Sept. 28: Post Working Bib of 5 Sources.

Oct. 3: Post Working Bib of 10 Sources.

Oct. 10: Post Working Bib of 15 Sources.

Weekend 2:

Oct. 9:

Elluminate or In-Person Session with Dr. Schmidt. Ethics and Scholarship. Read MLA Chap. 2 ("Legal Issues in Scholarly Publishing").

Post Response to Ethics Forum on MyHeritage.

Oct. 10:

Elluminate or In-Person Session with Dr. Schmidt. Scholarly Writing. Read MLA Chap. 3 ("Basics of Scholarly Writing"). Looking for Patterns in the Literature and Organizing a Literature Review.

Methodology for Primary Research vs. Methodology for Secondary Research (Chap. 3 of Thesis).

Homework/In-Class Exercises:

Post in the Patterns in the Literature Forum on MyHeritage.

Oct. 11:

Split Elluminate or In-Person Session with Dr. Schmidt. Attend or view ONE or the OTHER:

1. Students Writing about Literature. How to Prepare and Organize a Literature-Based Thesis. Skim Literary Research Guide (LRG) and Highlight or Mark Sections Related to Your METHODOLOGY, CRITICAL APPROACH, and SUBJECT MATTER (period, genre, etc.)

2. Students Pursuing Empirical Research (Linguistics or Pedagogy). How to Prepare and Organize an Empirically-Based Thesis. Skim Writing an Applied Linguistics Thesis or Dissertation (WALT).

Homework/In-Class Exercises:

Oct. 16: Working Bibliography of 20 Sources Due.

Oct. 30: Post in Methodology Forum on MyHeritage.

BEFORE Weekend 3:

Nov. 20: Draft of Chap. 2 (Review of Literature) Due.

Nov. 30: First Draft of Chap. 1 (Introduction) Due. (It may be extremely rough, but should at least identify your research question and approach.)

Weekend 3:

Dec. 4:

Elluminate or In-Person Session with Dr. Schmidt and Committee Members. Seminar Presentations of Chap. 1 and 2 Work. What Next? Read MLA Chap. 4 ("Preparation of Scholarly Manuscripts").

AFTER Class Concludes:

Dec. 11: Post Prospectus/Outline for Completion of Thesis on MyHeritage. Include second Draft of Chap. 1 and/or Chap. 2 based on committee feedback.

ONLINE FORMAT

The course sessions are held online. They will be recorded. If you cannot attend, you should view the recorded sessions and complete all in-class and out-of-class assignments (such as arranging conferences with Dr. Schmidt and Prof. Parks). Follow the same deadlines as above.
