Elements of Assessment:

The following assignments will be factored into your course grade. In addition, these will also help assess your progress in mastering the outcomes noted above.

(1) Class Participation and Exercises: The nature of this class demands that all students contribute regularly to the discussions. Both quality and quantity will be considered, with an emphasis on the former. In addition, students will complete a number of individual and small group exercises in class and post in the on-line Forums Altogether, 20 points may be earned for participation and exercises (including 5 for the "Check-In Tasks"). Due: Day-to-day.

(2) Forums: Students will complete a number of individual posts in the on-line Forums on MyHeritage. These Forums will ask students to reflect on specific issues in linguistics and their application to educational subjects such as teaching reading, building vocabulary, teaching writing, and so on. Altogether, these Forum posts will be worth 20 points. Due: Day-to-day. Final date for all Forums = July 17.

(3) Technical Exercises: After practicing with out-of-class and group in-class exercises, students will demonstrate mastery of performance skills in phonetics/phonology, morphology, and syntax in class using appropriate tools (phonetics charts, the Oxford English Dictionary online, etc.). The first two of these exercises will be worth 20 points and 15 points respectively and include a take-home portion; the third will be worth 15 points and be entirely take-home (50 points total). Due: TE #1 & #2 during ELLI, TE #3 July 17.
