Elements of Evaluation:

(1) Class Participation:

The nature of this course demands that students exhibit their understanding of the topics by participating in decision-making and interacting with other staff members and contributors. This may be done through MyHeritage Forums and/or physical or virtual presence in class sessions or office hours as well as email or phone if necessary. For that reason, class participation will comprise 20% of the semester grade.

(2) Assigned Editorial Duties:

Each student will be assigned manuscripts and artwork to edit and lay out in for some project (such as a poetry chapbook or webpages for Pahto's Shadow, Arts Day, Heritage Voices, or other group activity) in conjunction with the contributors (if any) and the editor-in-chief (Dr. Schmidt). Naturally, effective and efficient completion of these duties will be the most important element in the course grade: 30%.

(3) Exercises and Assignments:

As we learn new skills, students will be assigned exercises to practice them (see schedule and MyHeritage for specific assignments and information on how to submit them for credit in class or via Forum posts, email, Dropbox, etc.). Altogether, these exercises will make up 25% of the semester grade.

(4) Individual Project:

To recapitulate the skills learned in the course, students will be asked to produce a camera-ready newsletter or website or similar project of their own choosing at the end of the semester. Alternatively, the student may take on more of the group project (usually a poetry chapbook for Arts Day/Heritage Voices or an update of the Pahto webzine). The project will be worth 25% of the semester grade.

(5) Figuring Course Grades:

 Participation/Responses 20
 Editorial Duties 30
 Exercises and Assignments 25
 Individual Project 25
