Read MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing (MLA) Chap. 5, "Preparation of Theses and Dissertations."

Post in Forum on Types of Research

Sept. 7:

In-Person/Elluminate Session with Research Librarian.

Arrange Individual Conferences with Dr. Schmidt or Dr. James-Dunn and Research Librarian.

Continue Types of Research.

Workshop or Homework/In-Class Exercises:

Run searches in the Electronic Catalog, JSTOR, and Academic Search Premiere.

Find ONE (1) book related to your topic (or possible topic) through the Electronic Catalog. Post on MyHeritage.

Find ONE (1) article related to your topic (or possible topic) through JSTOR. Post on MyHeritage.

Find ONE (1) book or article related to your topic (or possible topic) through a third search tool. Post on MyHeritage.

Sept. 8:

MLA Documentation. SKIM MLA Chap. 6 ("Documentation: Preparing the List of Works Cited"), Chap. 7 ("Documentation: Citing Sources in the Text"), and Chap. 8 ("Abbreviation").

Complete Documentation Exercise. Post on MyHeritage.

BEFORE Weekend 2:

ASAP:

Get Approval of Topic/Research Approach/Research Question for Field Research Project. Post on MyHeritage.

Begin Preliminary Research for Review of Literature.

Oct. 1: Post Working Bib of Your Sources.

Weekend 2:

Oct. 11:

Ethics and Scholarship. Read MLA Chap. 2 ("Legal Issues in Scholarly Publishing").

Homework/In-Class Exercises:

Post Response to Ethics Forum on MyHeritage.

Oct. 12:

Scholarly Writing. Read MLA Chap. 3 ("Basics of Scholarly Writing"). Looking for Patterns in the Literature and Organizing a Literature Review.

Methodology for Primary Research vs. Methodology for Secondary Research. Pursuing Empirical Research: How to Prepare and Organize an Empirically-Based Research Project or Thesis.

Homework/In-Class Exercises:

Post in the Patterns in the Literature Forum on MyHeritage.

Individual Conferences with Drs. Schmidt and James-Dunn on Field Research Methodology + Workshop on Bibliography for Review of Literature (as time permits).

Oct. 13:

Interviewing. Planning Questions and Followups. Organizing Qualitative Data (such as Interviews and Observations).

Nov. 1:

Presentations of Field Research Projects (may be incomplete). Workshop: Practice in Avoiding Plagiarism in In-Text Quotation, Paraphrase, and Summary. (Review of Literature Draft and Interview/Personal Communication Draft for Peer Review and/or Individual Conferences--Schedule Friday only if you cannnot attend on other days.)

Nov. 2:

Workshop: Practice in Avoiding Plagiarism in In-Text Quotation, Paraphrase, and Summary.

Review of Literature Draft and Qualitative Analysis of Interview/Personal Communication Draft for Peer Review and/or Individual Conferences.

Nov. 3:

Presentations of Field Research Projects (may be incomplete). Review of Literature Draft and Interview/Personal Communication Draft for Peer Review and/or Individual Conferences, continued as needed.

AFTER Class Concludes:

Nov. 16: Interview/Personal Communication Due.

Nov. 23: Review of Literature Due.

Dec. 1: Written Field Research Project Due.

ONLINE FORMAT

The course sessions are held in person but simulcast online, so you may attend "live" online. They will also be recorded. If you cannot attend, you should view the recorded sessions and complete all in-class and out-of-class assignments (such as arranging conferences with Dr. Schmidt or Dr. James-Dunn and the Research Librarian as needed). Follow the same deadlines as above.
