BEFORE Weekend 1: What Is Language? Skim Fromkin, Chap. 1. Begin Phonology: The Phonetic Alphabet. Begin Fromkin, Chap. 5.

Pre-Homework for Chapter 5:

1. Attempt Exercises 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, and 17 at the end of the chapter. Stop if you get stuck!

2. If that goes well, begin to TRY to transcribe the FIRST paragraph from Chap. 1 (p. 1) into the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). For help with the sounds, watch the lecture video and consult the University of Iowa Phonetics Database (click on "Free Web Apps Here" at the top of the page).

3. For the Computer Literate Students: Download IPA font "Doulos" to write phonetic transcriptions in MS-Word, etc., on PC or Mac (You may find the video on MyHeritage useful in downloading, installing, and using this font.) Use “Character Map” (in “Accessories”) to enter the IPA symbols where necessary or use the IPA Doulos template from the Handouts in Unit I. Then you will not need to scan your homework to submit it!

Weekend 1:

Aug. 28: Introduction to Course. What Is Language? Skim Fromkin, Chap. 1. The History of English, Part I: Begin Fromkin, Chap. 8. Phonology: The Phonetic Alphabet. Read Fromkin, Chap. 5.

Homework/In-Class Exercises: 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, 5. 10, and 5.17. Then transcribe the FIRST paragraph from Chap. 1 (1) into IPA. I will correct the first part and then return it to you to correct the rest. For help with the sounds, watch the lecture video or consult the University of Iowa Phonetics Database.

Aug. 29: Pitch, Stress, and Other Phonological Patterns. Phonological Barriers to First and Second Language Acquisition. Exercises in Phonetics & Phonology. Skim Fromkin, Chap. 6. Morphology: Words, Their Origins, Their Structures, and Their Meanings. Read Fromkin, Chap. 2. Finish Fromkin, Chap. 8. Exercises in Morphology (Oxford English Dictionary Work in Lab). Visit HU Online Library (see instructional video) to look for journal article for Article Review.

Homework/In-Class Exercises: 6.1, 6.12, 6.13. Next, work 2.3, 2.4, 2.11, and 2.13. Then go to OED online to complete 2.2 and 8.7.

Aug. 30: Continue Work on Phonology and Morphology. Take-Home Part of Technical Exercise #1 (Phonetics/Phonology) Distributed. Organize and work on Group or Individual Project.

BEFORE Weekend 2: Half of Journal (Blog) Entries Due by Sept. 24. Have article for Article Review selected and ready for approval.

Weekend 2:

Sept. 25: Turn in Take-Home Part of Technical Exercise #1. Technical Exercise #1 in Class. Draft of Article Review for Workshop. Discuss Journals (Blogs). Syntax: The Structure of Language. Read Fromkin, Chap. 3 (OR CHAP. 4 FROM 8TH EDITION SUPPLIED BY YOUR INSTRUCTOR). Traditional Syntax and Modern Methods (Structural, Transformational). The Role of Syntax in Teaching Writing. Read the short version of the University of York reports on Teaching Grammar: Report 1. Report 2.

Homework/In-Class Exercises: 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, and 3.8 plus additional sentences. Then complete Syntax Practice Sentences handout.

Sept. 26: Technical Exercise #2 in Lab (Morphology + Phonetics Review). Exercises in Syntax. Semantics: The Meaning and Structure of Words in Combination. Read Fromkin, Chap. 4. Exercises in Semantics: Linguistic Creativity—Playing with Metaphors and Figurative Speech. Pragmatics. Language Acquisition: Wired for Language or Learning Process (or Both?). Read Fromkin, Chap. 9.

Homework/In-Class Exercises: 4.2, 4.5 (Part One), 4.6, 4.7, 4.8, and 4.9.

Sept. 27: Graduate Student Presentations for 523A. Reminder for Graduate Evaluations for 523A. Takehome: Technical Exercise #3 (Syntax + Phonetics and Morphology Review). As Time Permits: Begin Sociolinguistics: Language and Society. More Pragmatics. Fromkin, Chap. 7.

Oct. 2: As Time Permits: Language Acquisition and Sociolinguistics, continued. Historical Linguistics: Language Development and Change. Read Fromkin, Chaps. 8 and 12. Work on Undergraduate Group Presentations.

Oct. 3: As Time Permits: Language Acquisition and Sociolinguistics, continued. Undergraduate Presentations. Discuss ESL/BLE and MS/Secondary English WEST-E/NES testing. Reminder for Evaluations for 330.

Oct. 4: As Time Permits: Language Acquisition and Sociolinguistics, continued. Undergraduate Presentations.

AFTER Class Concludes:

Week 3: Morphology: Words, Their Origins, Their Structures, and Their Meanings. Read Fromkin, Chap. 2. Finish Fromkin, Chap. 8. Exercises in Morphology (Oxford English Dictionary work).

Homework:

(a) Arrange testing site and complete Technical Exercise #1 (Flexible, but try for F1 9/18, F2 11/13).

(b) Go to online Oxford English Dictionary to complete 2.2 and 8.7. See instructional video for assistance.

(c) Complete Exercises 2.3, 2.4, 2.11, and 2.13.

(d) List 5 "true" acronyms and 5 "alphabetic" acronyms (those where you pronounce the LETTERS of acronym like "FBI"). Then invent 5 of your own acronyms and indicate whether they are "true" or "alphabetic" acronyms.

Week 4: Exercises in Morphology, cont.

Homework:

(a) Visit HU Online Library (see instructional video) to look for journal article for Article Review.

(b) Answer Forums on Morphology.

Week 4: Middle of Term

Long Range Homework:

(a) Arrange testing site and complete Technical Exercise #2 (Flexible, but try for F1 9/28, F2 11/20).

(b) Draft of Article Review for peer review (if desired) by F1 9/25, F2 11/20. Final draft due F1 10/1, F2 11/23.

(c) Organize, get topic approved, and begin work on Group or Individual Project.

(d) Share and Respond to Blogs (Linguistics Journals) Entries.

Weeks 5-6: Syntax: The Structure of Language. Read Fromkin, Chap. 3. Parts of Speech. Traditional Syntax and Modern Methods (Structural, Transformational). The Role of Syntax in Teaching Writing.

Week 7: Sociolinguistics: Language and Society. Pragmatics. Read Fromkin, Chap. 7. BLE/ESL and English 5-12 WEST-E/NES Review for Washington students as needed.

Homework:

(a) Blog Entries ALL DUE by end of Week 8 (F1 10/16, F2 12/11).

(b) Share and Respond to Blogs (Linguistics Journals).

Week 8: Wrap-up. Complete Online Evaluation.

Homework:

(a) Answer Forums on Sociolinguistics.

(b) Presentation of Group or Individual Projects on Elluminate (Arrange with Dr. Schmidt for Week 7 or 8).
