Reading Questions for Berkeley and Taylor

(1) What would Berkeley regard as truly “real”?

(2) What arguments does he use to support his position?

(2) How might Berkeley’s position or arguments relate to his personal background as a clergyman in the Anglican Church?

(4) Can you think of anything in your own experience that disagrees with Berkeley's analysis? That is, have you experienced anything that would lead you believe in material “stuff”?

(8) Can you think of anything in your own experience that disagrees with Taylor’s analysis? That is, have you experienced anything that would lead you believe in non-material (mental or spiritual) “stuff”?

(Threaded Discussion Questions) How might it affect a culture if everyone in that culture held either Berkeley’s or Taylor’s position in common? What might you imagine as some specific consequences of everyone in society holding one of these positions?
