Take-Home Examination

Instructions:

(1) Answer the following questions as directed, either on these sheets or an attached sheet.
(2) You may use your books or outside resources in answering.
(3) When asked for examples, do not use the main example given in your text. However, you may use examples from the class posts on MyHeritage or the supplemental poems in the text.
(4) Return the exam to my office (Simkins 2112), post on MyHeritage (PREFERRED!!), or e-mail by 5:00 p.m. on the date posted on the Course Schedule.

(1) Give an example of each of the following types of poem (1 point each; 4 points total):

(2) Define AND give an example of the following terms as used to discuss poetry (2 points each; 12points total):

(3) Explain the difference between a word's denotation and its connotation AND give an example of two words with the same denotation but different connotations (2 points).

(4) Mark and identify the meter (stress pattern and number of feet) used in the following passages (1 point each; 4 points total):

You should read them aloud to make sure that you "hear" the beat properly. Notice that some stress patterns for single-syllable words COULD be spoken differently, but only one naturally fits the overall meter.

b) One Monday morning, 9 a.m. / I fell and landed on my friend.
