Paper #2: Explication

Instructions:

Write a short (2 pages—500-750 words—double-spaced, typed/wordprocessed) line-by-line explication of a poem from your text. Be sure to discuss all aspects of the meaning, including specifying the subject and theme, identifying the voice (including persona, style of language, and tone/attitude), and explaining any images present as well as analyzing all figurative language (metaphors, similes, personification, symbols, and so on) as appropriate for your poem. Take care to use proper technique in quoting words, phrases, and lines from the poem (see text for instructions on proper format).

If you are taking this in the same term as Literary Theory, you can focus the explication on how the poem reflects one of those approaches (for example, Feminism/Gender Theory, New Historicism, Myth Criticism, Marxism, Post-Colonialism, Psychological Approaches, etc.) or generates a particular response (Reader-Response, Deconstruction, etc.)
