Paper #1: Formal Analysis

Instructions:

Write a short (1.5-2 pages double-spaced, typed/wordprocessed) formal analysis of a poem from your text. Be sure to discuss the voice (including persona, style of language, and tone/attitude), the rhythm and rime schemes (including such techniques as alliteration and assonance and internal rime for an open form poem), use of spaces/indents/linebreaks (especially for open form poems) and the employment of other techniques such as imagery, figurative language, and so on as appropriate for your poem. As you identify and illustrate the technical aspects of the poem, be sure to indicate which elements work well or poorly (IYHO). Take care to use proper technique in quoting words, phrases, and lines from the poem (see text for instructions on proper formats).

If you are taking this in the same term as Literary Theory, you can use this for an approach such as Formalism or New Criticism, but make sure to use the appropriate terminology for the theory.
