Elements of Evaluation:

The following assignments will be factored into your course grade:

(1) Class Participation/Reading Response: The nature of this class demands that all students contribute regularly to the discussions, including the Jenzabar Forum questions posted at the Heritage College Virtual Campus and/or short in-class written responses. Both quality and quantity will be considered, with an emphasis on the former. Altogether, 40 points may be earned for participation and other reading responses.

(2) Presentation: Each student will work as individuals or in pairs to select one of the stories or poems in the reading list, and each of these individuals/groups will be responsible for providing an introduction to the work’s context (background to author, times, etc.) and for helping to direct the class in examining the work. Internet students may either videotape this assignment or write an outline of how they would present the material, including possible discussion questions and followups. This assignment will be worth 15 points.

(3) Out-of-Class Papers: Students will write three short papers of 500-750 words (2-3 typed/wordprocessed, double-spaced pages) concerning the readings. Topics for these papers will be discussed in class and workshop sessions will be scheduled to assist students in writing them. The first of these papers will be worth 20 points and the others 25 each (70 points total). The last will include an annotated bibliography of sources worth an additional 5 points.

(4) Short Answer/Essay Exams: Students will write three examinations in class. These will all be open book; some parts may also be open note. Review sessions will be scheduled prior to each exam to help students prepare for them. The first of these exams will be worth 20 points and the others 25 each (70 points total). Internet students will arrange a proctered setting to take these exams.
