Elements of Evaluation:

The following assignments will be factored into your course grade:

(1) Participation/Reading Responses: The nature of this class demands that all students contribute regularly to the discussions. We will be responding in multiple ways to the readings in your History 101H and English 221H courses: clarifying course content, making connections between the two sets of course materials, and exploring ways of writing about college subject matter. Both quality and quantity will be considered, with an emphasis on the former. Altogether, 30 points may be earned for participation.

(2) Out-of-Class Papers: Students will write a series of papers for their History 101H and English 221H courses. In this course, we will work on these papers and improve our writing skills, with particular emphasis on organization and use/documentation of source materials. These papers include the following:

World History Chapter Summary/Response Papers. We will use these to develop skills at summarizing and responding to academic texts. At the end of the term, choose your three best summary/response papers as part of your English 101H portfolio.

World History Historical Figure Report (5 typed/word-processed pages).

World Literature Love Songs Presentation. We will complement this by introducing various ways to structure an effecttive comparison/contrast paper. You will turn in an outline of your presentation for English 101H.

World Literature Comparison/Contrast Paper (600-750 words, 2-3 typed/word-processed pages). Comparison between Ancient and Classical Cultures.

World Literature Midterm Paper (see details in English 221H syllabus). Minimum of 3 references in APA format.

World Literature Term Paper (750-2250 words, 3-9 typed/word-processed pages). Minimum of 5 references in APA format.

(3) In-Class Essays: To demonstrate mastery of the skills developed in writing World History and World Literature papers, students will complete three in-class writings. All three will be open book but not open note. The first will be a summary-response paper drawing on a section of one of your texts (TBA). The second will be a comparison/contrast essay comparing two of the cultures examined in your history and literature courses. The third will be a synthesis of ideas about a single culture, drawing on both history and literature to understand that culture better. Preparation sessions will be scheduled prior to each in-class writing. Each of these writings will be worth 20 points (60 points total).
